Penicuik Community Garden

The gardening group is developing an area within Penicuik Park as a community garden.  Our aim is to encourage the growing of more fresh fruit and vegetables in gardens and other spaces in Penicuik. Some of us used to be involved in the Lost Garden in the Penicuik Estate (no longer a community garden) and we’re still looking for a bigger piece of land to grow on a larger scale. Meanwhile we’ve established a licence with the council to use a small area between John St and the football pitch. We hope to act as a demonstration space, somewhere to share knowledge between experienced and not-so-experienced gardeners and especially to hold family-friendly outdoor events to get the next generation involved!

We’ve already built 10 raised beds with materials salvaged from the Lost Garden and last year successfully grew a range of veg, herbs and flowers. There’s also the neighbouring Community Orchard and the beginnings of a soft fruit garden. And this year who knows – Wildflower areas? Willow structures? Grow our own bread? There’s plenty of scope for new ideas and input and we’re very keen for new people to come along and give it a go.

We welcome anyone interested in organic growing – looking after the soil and avoiding using pesticides – whether expert or complete novice. DIY skills would be particularly valuable.

Oh, and we love flowers too!
